The old country

July 23, 2019

At the start of this month, Johan and I went back to Sweden to meet up with his parents and Nestor up in the north. This picture of Elvis is from one evening when he went swimming in the sea, while Nestor was barking at him wanting to do what Elvis was doing, but he didn’t really know how to I guess. Johan filmed everything, I hope he will post it on his instagram, it’s so sweet.

Anyway. When the 6 planned days up north had passed, I was sitting in my mum’s kitchen and we were 10 minutes away from going to the airport to go back to Berlin and talking about when we would see each other again. I looked at Elvis, my mum and Thomas with tears in my eyes, Johan looked at me and said Sandra, you should stay. So true, why sit in their kitchen and already plan the next visit when already there? So I stayed for a bit more than a week to just take it easy, spend time with my sister, her kids and boyfriend, bicycle around my old hometown for the first time in 20 years, walking slowly down the streets and get a little bit of their everyday life in my life again. So happy to have so much love up there, I sometimes wonder what I’m doing in Berlin, but this is where my life is – there are reasons why I left Luleå 20 years ago and as much as I love to visit, it’s not my chosen place to live.

Hope to see them again soon.

I understand completely how you feel although now after almost 25 years abroad, I feel more and more at home away from home.

Hello Sandra….I have followed your blog for sometime now, but never made a comment before, I have no blog to share. I so admire your blog, it’s honesty and gentle nature, your creative lifestyle lends itself to such a worth while life. I will get some wrist worm soon. I do a lot of sewing and knitting. When we lived in Australia during the early 70’s we met a couple from Kil in Sweden, Laila and Per-Ove. We have remained in contact since they returned to Sweden and us (Alan and I ) returned to UK. Two years ago we had a holiday in Kil. Exploring the area by bike and walking. Loved it. We travelled via Gothenburg. Made our way to Kil by train. I was hoping to see a moose. Now us four are grandparents and have something else to share. Your blog about your recent holiday in Sweden was beautiful, sentimental, memorable and made me have tears. Our son lives in Frankfurt, with wife Nina and three children. Our daughter loves in Mechelen, Belgium with her partner . Hiroki our eldest grandchild has just finished his degree, he has lived in Copehagen for the last four years. Our granddaughter lives in Canterbury while she attends uni. She is close at hand a mere twenty minutes away by train.
We have tears when we visit Germany and Belgium, also Denmark and when it comes to saying goodbye to our newest and dearest. I still haven’t got used to the idea of us all being so split up! But we are so happy they are carving out their own lives. Sandra you are such a beautiful person, both you and Johan are a blessing for our world. I do so love seeing your real life images from Sweden when you holiday there. It’s a lovely country. The only thing I can share is a much under used face book account. It’s good to message family and keep in touch that way. I am not such a technical person. But I would like to share it with you just to show my face. Thank you for such interesting blogs. I am an avid reader. Bless Christine.
Face book name is Christine Plenty. Kent. England.
